It was published from July 1942 to November 1996. NON-BILLBOARD LIST OF CASHBOX CHART HITS: 1960 – 1996Ĭashbox magazine was the competitor to Billboard in America. If you'd asked me 15 years ago when I bought them, I would have had all the time in the world, but having that sort of spare time is a luxury for me now! Sorry. Nelson - the magazines are all in storage and I don't have the time to track them down and flick through all of them at this stage, sorry. Sorry for the confusion and thanks for pointing it out! Even as I was typing it, it didn't quite sound right, but I knew the basic premise was correct. The article I remembered was talking about why Madonna was NOT #1 that week ("We Are The World" had higher sales, even though "Crazy For You" had much higher airplay). "Crazy For You" by Madonna never hit #1 in Cash Box, it peaked at #2 for 4 weeks.Oh, that's right!! "Material Girl" peaked at #1 and "Crazy For You" peaked at #2 (the opposite of Billboard). They said that in the upper reaches of the chart, they placed more emphasis on sales rather than airplay, as they believed it was a better indicator of a single's popularity. The week "Crazy For You" by Madonna went to #1, they chose to write an article about why Madonna had reached #1 on their chart, when it was yet to reach #1 on the Hot 100. I have a whole bunch of old Cash Box magazines stored at my parents' place - we're talking years and years worth that I bought from our local library when they were culling all of their old books. Is there any chance you can take a look at it about worldwide sales or certifications of an album? Like Thriller, etc? I'm not sure what happened with the Wayne Newton track, though. Billboard didn't operate this way, hence the differences. In essence, they used a sliding scale to weight sales/airplay (the higher up the chart, the larger the role played by sales). Cash Box really struggled in the 90s, though, but prior to that, it was seen as a good competitor to Billboard. Cash Box and Billboard used different data sources for their charts.
